The Dolomites, the Pale Mountains

The Dolomites, the Pale Mountains

Not everyone is aware of the fact that the Dolomites are also called the Pale Mountains. It is indeed a curious moniker.

Once upon a time, south of the Alps, in what was then called the Reign of the Alps, the son of the King had a very ardent wish, that of going to the moon. One day, roaming through the woods, he met two very old men, who happened to be inhabitants of the moon, and they took him with them to visit their land.

Spring is now in full swing, the days are getting longer and we inevitably think about excursions and hikes in the mountains.

The legend of King Laurino

The legend of King Laurino

Once upon a time, there was a short and not so good-looking king called Laurino, whose reign, hidden among the rocks of the Rosengarten, was full or marvellous roses. He was also King of many dwarfs, who spent their time digging and searching for crystals, gold and silver. Laurino possessed two magical weapons: one belt, which gave him strength equal to twelve men, and a cloak, which made him invisible.

Sky running

Sky running

Sky running, that is running towards the sky.
This name evokes extraordinary emotions and sensations. Sky running means, in fact, running along mountain paths, going up and up. This sport is getting more and more popular; it requires fitness and stamina, but also the capability of reading the terrain quickly, avoiding the “traps”, and also listening to our body, seeing how it reacts with the constant strain on bones and joints with a steep and demanding terrain.

The Salvan with a red jacket

The Salvans are legendary figures of the Ladin culture. They were the inhabitants of woods and sheepfolds and lived alone in very humble conditions.

Once upon a time, in a small hamlet in Alta Badia, there was one of these little men, he loved sheep so much that he would always find ways to pamper them. The inhabitants of that place felt that they did not need a shepherd anymore, for he was with the herd day and night. He would bring the animals to the best pastures, caressing and pampering them, never leaving them alone, not even for a moment. He missed them at night, as well, so he would often take them grazing under the moonlight.

The Mezzalama Trophy, the “Marathon of the Glaciers”, takes place on 25 April this year. It is an extremely testing competition and, for its 20th anniversary, the route has been reversed, starting in Gressoney la Trinité and ending in Breuil Cervinia. It is a ski-touring route which epitomises a return to ancient traditions.
